Mars “Insight” Landing Party

Witness history being made!

Join the Holland Museum to watch the live arrival of NASA’s InSight lander on Mars. In NASA’s first attempt at landing on the planet since 2012, the 800-pound lander will be released above Mars and will descend 70 miles through the planet’s atmosphere before a parachute and descent engines will engage to slow the lander’s final descent to the planet’s surface.

Designed to study the interior of Mars, InSight will help scientists better understand how Mars formed over 4.5 billion years ago. It is equipped with a robotic arm for taking samples, a seismometer for tracking marsquakes, and a thermometer for measuring temperature.

NASA’s live coverage of the landing begins at 2:00 p.m., with the actual landing planned for 3:00 p.m. Feel free to join us at any time throughout the event. The museum’s Mars: Astronomy and Culture exhibit and Spark!Lab will be open for the event for attendees to enjoy.
