Before he turned to writing for public television, Milton Nieuwsma traveled the world covering stories for the Chicago Tribune and other major newspapers. His newest book, Dateline World: 20 Dispatches from the Earth and One from Hell, is a compendium of 21 of his best pieces. Nieuwsma will talk about his experiences as a freelance writer in our final program for the Newsflash! The Story of Journalism in Holland exhibition.
The author will be available to sign his books following the program. There will be 10 copies of his newest book, Dateline World: 20 Dispatches from the Earth and One from Hell, for sale at the Holland Museum. All proceeds benefit the Holland Museum.
After the program, Holland Sentinel executive editor and Pulitzer Prize nominee Sarah Leach will be honored for her coverage of Ottawa County government.

Milton Nieuwsma Biography
Milton Nieuwsma, a two-time Emmy Award-winning writer and journalist, traveled around the world for many years covering stories for the Chicago Tribune and other major newspapers. He is the writer and creator of the acclaimed PBS series Inventing America and the author or co-author of seven books including Kinderlager, named “Best Book for Teens” by the New York Public Library. In 2009 Hope College honored him with a Distinguished Alumni Award.
Nieuwsma started his writing career as a reporter for the Holland Evening Sentinel, while in high school. After graduating with an English degree from Hope College in 1963, he worked as a public information officer at Wayne State University and hosted a weekly radio program, The Fifth Freedom on WQRS-FM. In the late 1970s, Nieuwsma began writing historical features and travel articles for the Chicago Tribune. In 1978, he received a master’s degree from the University of Illinois Springfield.
