The Kitchen

A fire in 1924 destroyed all but the shell of the original kitchen which was rebuilt as a garage for the family vehicles. The current kitchen was reconstructed during the renovations of the home and is based on original floor plans. It contains a main kitchen, bathroom, pantry, and washroom. There was also an attached wood house which is now an accessible entrance to the home. Opposite the washroom is the stair way to the kitchen attic (not connected to the main house attic) which was used for storage and hanging clothes to dry on rainy days.

The kitchen area was much less decorative than the rest of the home since it was never seen by guests. The housekeeper and her helpers did all the food preparation, cleaning, and laundry for the household from these back rooms.

The table, clock, and shelf, high chair, bird cage, and most of the kitchen utensils belonged to the family and date to the 1900 period. The stove and kerosene center light fixture are local donations.

Grain-painted wainscot, doors, and windows reproduce surfaces found on an original built-in cabinet and flour bin in the pantry. The paint color matches early paint still visible on the ceiling of the bathroom.
