The Kitchen Closet and Back Stairway

This closet was used to store coats and cleaning supplies. It was the location of the house’s telephone, installed in the 1880s. The housekeeper and the Cappon children used this stairway. The bright green paint color was determined by microscopic analysis. A flower decorated wooden carpet sweeper made by the Bissell Company of Grand Rapids can be seen next to the crate containing extra leaves for the dining room table.
