The Maid's Bedroom

The Cappon’s live-in housekeeper was given a small upstairs bedroom. She oversaw the older children who slept in pairs or groups in the other upstairs bedrooms. We know the names of two of the Cappon’s maids who used this room. Eighteen-year-old Jane Schrootenboer worked for the family in 1880. Following the death of first wife Catarina in 1887, Jacoba De Kok became the maid and later Isaac’s wife. The American-made trunk she brought to the house from her parents’ home is under the window. The 1902 inventory lists an ash bed and bureau, a mirror, bowl and pitcher, three common chairs, and a rag carpet as the room’s contents.
