Abraham Lincoln Cappon's Bedroom

This small bedroom off the upstairs sitting room belonged to the youngest child of Isaac and Catarina. Later the room belonged to Franklin Cappon.

A Nelson, Matter & Co. (a Grand Rapids furniture company) walnut and ash bedroom set is now in Abe’s bedroom. The bed, washstand and dresser display the original finish and near perfect condition they had when made for practicing Holland physician, Dr. Annis, sometime before 1873. The set appears in the Nelson, Matter catalog of the time (in which various pieces of Cappon furniture can also be found) and examination of drawer construction reveals that it was made before the company began using dovetailing machines in 1873. All pieces are prominently labeled “Dr. Annis, Holland MI” which indicates that the furniture was shipped by rail from Grand Rapids to Holland. Only one piece of the original furniture for this room was found in the house. This set is thought to be a fitting replacement.
