Preserving Your Family Stories with Shandra Martinez

Preserving Your Family Stories with Shandra Martinez

Journalist Shandra Martinez, founder of Legacina, has spent over 30 years interviewing people and sharing their stories. Now, she’s focused on preserving her own family’s history. In this session, Shandra will show you how to turn old photos collecting dust in boxes into keepsake videos for future generations, using simple tools like your phone and apps like Google Scan. You’ll learn the best times to record oral histories, the kinds of questions that spark meaningful memories, and how to involve multiple generations in the storytelling process. Through real examples of families creating video stories together, you’ll see how impactful and accessible this process can be. Walk away with practical tips, easy-to-use tools, and the confidence to start preserving your family’s legacy, one story at a time.

Shandra Martinez

Legacina Founder

What started as a personal project for Shandra, gathering old photos and videos of her children and loved ones, quickly grew into something more meaningful. She wanted to preserve her family’s legacy, so she began turning those memories into heartfelt videos that her now-grown children deeply treasure. As she shared these with friends, they began asking for help creating their own keepsakes for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special moments. With her background in journalism and a strong belief in the power of storytelling, Shandra now helps others preserve their family histories. She offers the support, tools, and encouragement people need to turn their memories into meaningful stories that can be passed down for generations.

This program is part of the Holland Museum “Tales from the Archives” series which explores local history topics supported by the Holland Museum’s collection and archives.
