The Civil Rights Road Trip is an opportunity to open one’s eyes to the truths about America’s past and how it continues to influence our society today.

Join Barbara Lee VanHorssen from the Momentum Center along with previous trip participants Cindy Anderson, Betsy Jellema, Jane Stoepker, Chrysteen Moelter-Gray, and Jim Kocher as they discuss their life-changing experiences in Birmingham, Selma, Montgomery, and Memphis. The Civil Rights Road Trip is organized by the Momentum Center and sponsored by West Wind. The 2023 Civil Rights Road Trip is scheduled from April 24-27. The Edmund Pettus Bridge, built in 1940, carries U.S. Route 80 Business across the Alabama River in Selma, Alabama. It is named after Edmund Pettus, a former Confederate brigadier general, U.S. senator, and state-level leader of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan.

Holland Museum Adult Cultural Lens Program, "The Civil Rights Road Trip"

The powerful ‘Lynching Memorial’ at the Legacy Museum located in Montgomery, Alabama. The memorial consists of 800 weathered steel boxes hanging in an open canopy. Each marker represents a county or jurisdiction that experienced a lynching between 1877 and 1950. On the boxes you’ll find the names of forgotten victims.

Biographies

Barbara Lee VanHorssen

Holland Museum Adult Cultural Lens Program, "The Civil Rights Road Trip"Barbara Lee VanHorseen is the founder and Experi-Mentor of the Momentum Center, a grassroots movement to create a stigma-free community. She is an ordained interfaith minister and holds an MBA in Leadership Studies. Barbara is working to make a more understanding and hospitable world for their children who struggle with mental illness and developmental disabilities.


Jane Stoepker

Holland Museum Adult Cultural Lens Program, "The Civil Rights Road Trip"Jane Stoepker is a retired art teacher, a member of the Momentum Center AntiRacism Task Force, and a Civil Rights Road trip attendee and advocate.


Betsy Jellema

Holland Museum Adult Cultural Lens Program, "The Civil Rights Road Trip"Betsy Jellema is a Parent Educator (teaching parenting skills to new parents) with a BA degree from Michigan State University. A West Michigan native, Betsy is married with 4 children and 10 grandchildren and serves on the Collections Committee of the Muskegon Museum of Art.


Chrysteen (Chrys) Moelter-Gray

Holland Museum Adult Cultural Lens Program, "The Civil Rights Road Trip"Chrys Moelter-Gray is a retired German, Spanish and Bilingual Education teacher who volunteers at C3 Spiritual Community, Momentum Center, MHPSA, Meals on Wheels and serves on the Parks and Recreation Committee for Grand Haven Township, the Local Advisory Committee for Harbor Transit and is an organizer of the Vigil for Peace and Justice in Grand Haven.


Cindy Anderson

Holland Museum Adult Cultural Lens Program, "The Civil Rights Road Trip"Cindy Anderson, a Former Speech/Language Pathologist in Grand Haven Area Public Schools, is a Co-founder of Tri-Cities Women Who Care and is currently serving as Trustee for Grand Haven Area Community Foundation as well as volunteering for several non-profits.


Jim Kocher

Holland Museum Adult Cultural Lens Program, "The Civil Rights Road Trip"Jim Kocher is Advisory Counsel to Samaritas, a former Mission Director of ELCA, President of Burcham Hills Retirement Center, a member of Sparrow Hospital Institutional Review Board, and is a consultant to Leaders in Transition.

The Holland Museum tells the story of Holland, Michigan, from its settlement by Dutch immigrants to today’s innovative, successful, and diverse community. Featuring thousands of fascinating historic objects, as well as artwork from the Netherlands from the 1600s through the 1900s, our permanent History and Dutch Galleries are not to be missed.

Spark!Lab Smithsonian encourages children and families to create, collaborate, explore, test, experiment, problem-solve, and invent. Enjoy hands-on STEAM activities that combine traditional science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) with art, history, and creativity.

FREE: Holland Museum members and children ages 5 and under are free.
$1.00 Museums for All admission (EBT or WIC card holder, $1.00/person, up to 4 people per card).

Discounts
The Holland Museum offers an admission discount to Veteran’s, active military, and educators. If you are active military, the discount applies each person in your party. If you are a veteran or educator, the discount applies to that person only. Admission for veterans, active military, and educators is $5.

ACCESSIBILITY
The Museum has a handicapped-accessible entrance on the east side of the building next to the circle drive. To access the building, please press the button to the right of the door and the front desk will buzz visitors in. Take the elevator from the ground floor (G) to the first level (1L) and you will arrive behind the reception desk. There is also a wheelchair available for patron use. Each level of the museum is handicapped accessible, as are the restrooms. If you have any specific needs, please call the front desk at (616) 796-3329.

PARKING 
The Holland Museum is located at the corner of 10th Street and River Avenue, across from Centennial Park. Please use the parking lot behind the museum on 9th Street or street parking is available along 10th Street. Handicap accessibility is available from the east side of the building.

BLUE STAR MUSEUM 
We are a Blue Star Museum and offer free admission to active military and their families from Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 2023, through  Labor Day weekend, Saturday, September 2, 2023.
