HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) — The cities of Holland and Coldwater have been awarded historic preservation grants from the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). They join five other communities that will each get a chunk of $250,000.
“For more than forty years, the CLG (Certified Local Government) program has helped create partnerships that support communities in their efforts to plan for, invest in, and tell the story of their irreplaceable heritage assets,” Ryan M. Schumaker, State Historic Preservation officer, said in a release. “This year’s awards continue to build on that tradition, and SHPO looks forward to working collaboratively with these recipients to support important local efforts.”
The city of Holland, in partnership with the Holland Museum, will be using the grant to hire a contractor to replace a damaged roof. In 2023, the museum estimated that the repair to the old post office building would be seven figures.
The city of Coldwater, in partnership with the Coldwater Community Center, Inc., will hire a contractor to complete a comprehensive structural engineering analysis of the Beech House.
The other communities awarded money include Charlevoix, Detroit, Flat Rock, Livonia and Washtenaw County.
