The Old Wing Mission

Built in 1844-45, The Old Wing Mission was named after a Native American convert and is one of the oldest remaining structures in the area. The main portion of this building was the residence of George N. Smith and his family. Close to this structure were a church and a school as well as other Native American dwellings. In 1846-47, the first Dutch settlers began arriving to this location and were lodged here. As the settlement grew, Smith and the Native Americans moved north and established a new village on Grand Traverse Bay. The Old Mission Wing is now a registered Michigan Historic Site and is located at 5298 E. 147th Street in Holland, Michigan.
