Main Hall
Upon arrival to the home, 19th century visitors would arrive at the front gate, walk up a board walk, ring the doorbell, and give their calling card to the maid. Although entering the home is a different experience today, the home looks much the same. The massive arched front doors feature frosted and wheel-cut windows at the top, typical of Italianate architecture.

The main hallway features black walnut and ash woodwork, along with much of the rest of the first floor. The wainscoting along the hallway and staircase is called lincrusta. This material was invented in England in 1877 and is a precursor to linoleum. It is made of linseed oil and wood flour that is then pressed into a form.

The walnut hall stand holds canes, a shawl, and a derby hat from the Cappon collection. The stand was made by Berkey & Gay Co. as was much of the furniture throughout the home.
